My Diploma Thesis in costume Design / 2001 ESMOD Munich
Topic: “1984”by George Orwell. Staged for the theatre.
With my final year project I set the course for a great deal of my subsequent artistic work – my grappling with utopian and dystopian visions. The costumes I designed illustrate George Orwell’s totalitarian system and the state’s size and omnipotence over its fragile and transparent citizens. Like oversized comic figures, my thought police march through the lives of the protagonists Winston and Julia. The daily dramas in the police state take place in front of the sets of a 360° theater, which were filmed all around and projected onto large screens. In real life I showed the scene of the arrest of Winston and Julia during the thesis fashion show in the George-Elsner Hall in Munich.
